Du boosts data management

The UAE’s second telecoms operator, du, has implemented an information management infrastructure to help it deliver data more reliably.

Du is the first company in the Middle East to deploy the Invista high-performance networked storage virtualisation solution from EMC, which will enable it to pool resources from within its IT infrastructure to meet peaks in demand. The company has also worked with EMC to develop a system that grades its information in order of business importance.

“We see it as a very straight-forward way of managing what we know will be an incredibly fast-growing amount of data once du begins its commercial operations,” said Osman Sultan, CEO, du.

“Du has more than 19,000 existing customers using their mobile and internet connections and the new system will provide even more protection and security for them.”

Du is also aiming to consolidate data management across its telecoms, cable TV and internet businesses by adopting CLARiiON systems from EMC, and will use a CLARiiON Disk Library for its back-up and restore operations.

Mohammed Amin, general manager, EMC Middle East said, “This is a great step where du is simplifying and reducing the costs of managing the company’s data.”

Du believes that this implementation now puts its information management infrastructure on a par with global telecoms giants like Vodafone and Verizon. The telecoms provider is due to launch its own national mobile service later this year.
