Set to open in autumn 2008, the InterContinental Resort & Spa in Krems, Austria, will be the first European InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) property to be part of a healthcare complex. IHG recently signed a management agreement with IMC Beteiligungs GmbH, which will own and develop the 119-room hotel, as well as the 120-room Austrian Heart Centre healthcare clinic.
The newly built hotel will be adjacent to the clinic, which is to have complete medical facilities, including five operating theatres. Although the Heart Centre will be operated as an entirely separate enterprise, the InterContinental resort will be designed to complement the facility, creating a tranquil atmosphere ideal for recovering patients, their visitors and families.
"We have witnessed a growing trend in Europe for medical tourism, with strong demand from the Middle East and Russia. Austria has a high standard of medical care and superb infrastructure so is ideally positioned to attract patients and guests from Europe and beyond," said Jennifer Fox, chief operating officer for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Europe.
Less than an hour from Vienna International Airport, the resort will overlook the scenic Wachau Valley near the city of Krems. Views of the Danube River will provide a peaceful atmosphere, for patients and guests.
The hotel's planned wellness facilities, meanwhile, which will include a spa and indoor pool, have been selected to provide a combination of relaxation and recuperation. There will also be 290m² of meeting space, suitable for conferences, as well as an all-day dining restaurant.
The initiative, which will benefit the region’s economy, has been well received. "The government of the province of Lower Austria welcomes the decision of IHG together with IMC to open a five-star hotel in Krems and the Wachau, " said Dr Ernest Gabmann, vice governor of Lower Austria.
IHG already operates a similar property, the 229-room InterContinental Hotel & Conference Centre in Cleveland, USA which is located within the campus of the Cleveland Clinic, and according to Fox, the group plans to further develop this niche.
"We will continue our strategy to develop and introduce similar complexes in Europe and other regions of the world," she said.
