Team Y&R creative duo to represent Middle East at Cannes

A duo from Team Y&R will once again carry the flag for the Middle East at next month’s Cannes Lions.

A duo from Team Y&R will once again carry the flag for the Middle East at next month’s Cannes Lions.

Senior art director Shaun-Dean Thomas, left, and senior copywriter Keshan Naidu, will represent the region in the Young Creatives Competition, which is part of the Cannes advertising festival.

It’s the second year running that Thomas has been selected. Last year he was accompanied by fellow Team Y&R staffer Vincent Fichard. The pair came fourth.

Thomas and Naidu won the right to represent the region after a day-long competition at the IAA offices in Dubai Media City.
Teams representing the UAE’s major agencies were given a brief for a road safety campaign and asked to come up with the best interpretation. The judges chose Thomas and Naidu’s “0 to 6 Feet Under” execution.

The joint runners up, who were awarded silver, were Ryan Fantz and Nisreen Krimed from Intermarkets and Fiona Clark and Sophie Clark from Memac Ogilvy. The bronze slot went to Thamiz Pottamal and Joelle Zgheib from Publicis.

Thomas said: “It should help a little bit that I’ve been before. It means I’ll know the format on the day and will know what to expect. I already know who’s judging and what their tastes are, but it will be down to luck on the day.”

Ian Fairservice, boss of Motivate Val Morgan, which represent the Cannes Lions in the region, said he hoped to see teams from outside the UAE fighting to represent the region in future years. He said: “If teams want to come from Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in the Gulf to take part they will be welcome.”

The young creatives event was held with the support of the IAA. Joseph Ghossoub, CEO of The Holding Group, which includes agencies Team Y&R and Intermarkets, is currently the IAA’s World president.

A large delegation from the Middle East will attend the advertising festival, which takes place in the French town of Cannes from June 18 to 24. Fairservice said the official party would include Ghossoub, IAA UAE president Tanvir Kanji and DMC director Mohammed Al Mulla. He added: “Altogether I would expect about 40 to 50 people from the region to be going.”
