First Domotex for Dubai

This month sees Dubai playing an important role in the international flooring industry, as it prepares to host Domotex Middle East at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Previously held in China and Germany, this is the first time that the highly specialised trade event has come to the Middle East, giving designers in the Gulf an opportunity to explore new trends, and view the latest products to come from international looms.

A major focus of the show will be to help exhibitors access potential business within the lucrative Middle Eastern market. The construction boom in the Gulf combined with economic and population growth has resulted in massive opportunities for flooring companies in the region, which exhibitors are keen to capitalise on. Experts believe that between now and 2010, investments in property development in the UAE will amount to approximately 50 billion US$, generating a huge demand for high quality floor coverings.

“With the growing affluence of consumers in the Middle East, we believe this region will remain one of the fastest growing for flooring and furnishing components for the next 15-20 years at least,” said Anil Tyagi, General Manager, Modecor, Saudi Arabia. “We are confident our exhibitors will generate significant business benefit from participating in the event here,” says Angela Schaschen, co-organiser, Messe Middle East.

Around 250 exhibitors from 35 countries are expected to take part in the show, which will feature products from the entire flooring spectrum. Displays at the event, which is estimated to cover about 14,000 square metres, will include rugs and carpets, textile and resilient floor coverings, parquet and wooden flooring, laminates, natural stone and marble flooring as well as ceramic tiles. The entire range of fitting, laying, maintenance and applications technology will also be a key component of the exhibition, — useful for commercial interior designers in the UAE where marble and ceramics are used so prolifically in hotel projects.

A highlight of the show looks set to be the sheer diversity of exhibitors. Industry heavyweights will be appearing alongside a multitude of smaller producers. Kaindl Flooring from Austria — the world’s biggest manufacturer of laminate flooring will feature prominently, as will regional industry leader, Egypt’s Oriental Weavers. However, also set to attract attention is the Jordan River Foundation. The company sets up social projects such as carpet weaving to bring income to the poorest areas of the country. Its traditional carpets and hand woven rugs are made in the villages of Jordan’s Bani Hamida area. “We are coming to Domotex to meet potential partners and dealers and establish a network with small and medium sized business as well as wholesalers and retailers,” says director of JRF, Maha Khatib.

Organisers are so convinced of the success of the show that the date has already been set for Domotex 2007 in Dubai. This year’s exhibition runs from May 28-30.
