Arab world’s first superheroes unveiled

Kuwait’s Teshkeel Comics has revealed the identity of the world’s first superheroes based on Islamic culture.

Kuwait’s Teshkeel Comics has revealed the identity of the world’s first superheroes based on Islamic culture.

Called The 99, the comic books, which will have both English and Arabic editions, are due to go on sale across the region from June.

The concept is based on the 99 attributes of God in Islam, and there will be 99 characters from 99 countries.

The superheroes from the Middle East are represented by Noora the Light from the UAE and Jabbar the Powerful from Saudi Arabia.

Noora, real name Dana Ibrahim, is 18 years old and has the ability to see the “light of truth” in others. She will eventually be able to emit light blasts and manipulate light forms.

Saudi Arabia’s Jabbar, obtained his powers after an explosion shattered a hidden gem stone, shards of which embedded in his skin turning the 19-year-old into a giant. Jabbar, real name Nawaf Al-Bilali, can increase his mass and muscle size and is nearly invulnerable.

Dr Naif Al-Mutawa, founder and CEO of Teshkeel Comics, said The 99 was not designed to be religious, but aimed to communicate Islamic virtues.
