Oracle promises lifetime support to its customers

Oracle will continue supporting JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Siebel applications beyond its previously stated deadline of 2013, the firm said last month.

The software giant said it would also continue launching new versions of the applications, even after the anticipated launch of Oracle Fusion Applications in 2008.

The announcement was made last month at Oracle’s Collaborate conference in the US, as part of a programme Oracle is calling “Applications Unlimited”.

Oracle said it will also provide more information to users about product roadmaps and give lifetime support to existing JD Edwards, Siebel, PeopleSoft and Oracle customers.

“With today’s announcement we are giving customers the best of both worlds — more value from their existing applications, which we plan to enhance indefinitely, and an option to upgrade free of charge to future technologies, if customers have a business case to do so,” said Oracle president Charles Philips, in a statement announcing the programme.

The Oracle Fusion Applications, which are expected to be delivered by 2008, will now “simply represent another addition to the Oracle Applications Family,” Phillips added.

Oracle has been coming under increasing pressure from rivals such as SAP, which has been trying to convince JD Edwards and PeopleSoft customers to switch over to its products, by exploiting uncertainty about Oracle’s plans.

While Oracle has consistently said it will not force customers to migrate to Fusion if they do not want to, this announcement seems designed to reinforce that message.

“These next-generation enhancements will leverage the same industry standards and technologies that are planned for Oracle Fusion Applications, preserving customer investments,” said Oracle’s senior vice president of applications development, John Wookey, in the same statement.

“There will be no forced migrations and customers can count on Oracle’s unique Lifetime Support Policy,” he added.

Phillips claimed that Oracle has “30,000 satisfied customers” across JD Edwards, Oracle, PeopleSoft and Siebel Applications, representing the strongest product portfolio in the industry. In the Middle East, it acquired around 200 customers from the PeopleSoft/JD Edwa- rds acquisition.

Last month IT Weekly reported that Sara Group, the firm that runs Paris Gallery in Saudi Arabia is to replace
its JD Edwards solution with a solution from SAP (see IT Weekly 22-28 April 2006).

Sherif Sadek, IT manager for the Sara Group, told IT Weekly that uncertainty over the long term future of JD Edwards applications was part of the reason behind the firm’s decision.
