Mammut to precast labour housing

New labour accommodation is planned in response to the raised profile of living conditions in Dubai camps

Precast concrete producer, Mammut Technocrete, has secured contracts worth US $23 million (AED85 million) for the construction of labour accommodation in Dubai.

The housing complexes, which will cover approximately 200,000m2, are expected to be completed within 12 months.

Mammut was selected as the precast concrete sub-contractor by a host of contractors looking to build new labour accommodation, including Al Naboodah, System Construct, Roshan Construction, Suvadh Contracting, Al Arrab General Contracting and Al Bharat Contracting.

Poul Soegaard Nielsen, sales and marketing manager of Mammut Technocrete, said: “We are seeing an increase in demand for new labour accommodation, and with the increased focus on living conditions for workers in Dubai and the rest of the UAE, we expect the demand to continue and even increase in the future.

“We identified this demand some time ago and set up the requirements to meet it.”

The contract awards come hot on the heals of recent labour strikes that have been making headlines around the world. And with labour authorities in the country cracking down on labour accommodation standards, contractors are now being forced to invest in better facilities to house their workers.

“The reason why contractors have asked us to supply the precast is because they’re looking to set up the camps as quickly as possible and move their labourers in. The camps will be built in Ruwais and a lot of the free zones,” added Nielsen.

Following complaints about the non-payment of wages
and unpaid overtime, workers in Dubai have also protested against cramped living conditions — up to eight workers often share one room.
