Awards recognises regional online excellence

The Pan Arab Web Awards 2006 took place in Amman, Jordan on April 27. Jeddah-based Arabic music and movie distributor Rotana and media organisation LBC Group bagged the most direct site awards, with three each, while Dubai-based web developer Cactimedia's site creations helped it win the greatest number of accolades overall, with 12.

The Pan Arab Web Awards 2006 took place in Amman, Jordan on April 27. Jeddah-based Arabic music and movie distributor Rotana and media organisation LBC Group bagged the most direct site awards, with three each, while Dubai-based web developer Cactimedia's site creations helped it win the greatest number of accolades overall, with 12.

The ceremony was held at the Grand Hyatt Amman Hotel and gathered together 225 industry professionals. No less than 129 awards were handed out in total (Gold, Silver, Bronze and certificates), spanning 26 categories that covered almost every vertical industry sector - from travel and tourism to education, media and transportation.

In the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Oman’s www.nawras.om bagged the Gold prize, followed by Jordan’s Batelco (www.batelco.jo) in Silver position. Primus’ www.cns.com.jo website grabbed Bronze. However, two UAE sites were also recognised with certificates, namely those of Dubai Internet City (designed by Cactimedia, at www.dubaiinternetcity.com) and Cactimedia's own portal at (www.cactimedia.com).

As far as personal sites are concerned, the top rated site was Oman’s www.absoman.com/simplethoughts, which won the Gold prize, closely followed by Jordan-based www.latifaonline.net.

The Pan Arab Web Awards were held under the patronage of the Arab League and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in Jordan, and in the presence of HE Dr. Saoud Bin Abdel Aziz, Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League, HE Dr. Omar Al Kurdi, Minister of Communication and Information Technology and HE Mr.Mohammed Al Oudwan, Director General of the Royal Documentary Center.
