Linksys launches 'N'ow

Networking vendor Linksys has become one of the first manufacturers to offer ‘N’ standard wireless hardware with the launch of its WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router and WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook adaptor

Networking vendor Linksys has become one of the first manufacturers to offer ‘N’ standard wireless hardware with the launch of its WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router and WPC300N Wireless-N Notebook adaptor.

The products make use of 802.11n draft specification which, it is claimed offers four times the range and 12x the speed of standard 802.11g hardware.

The products both make use of MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) technology, which uses multiple send and receive aerials to boost range and speed over standard ‘G’ hardware. MIMO is also designed to tackle signal reflections (when a signal bounces off an object such as a wall) without incurring any loss in range.

Linksys reckons ‘N’ standard hardware will allow users to turn their home networks into media distribution platforms capable of tackling high-definition video, VoIP and online gaming.

The WRT300N router also features a four-port full-duplex 10/100Mbits/s ethernet switch and is expected to appear in stores in the region by month’s end. Regional pricing is yet to be announced though online searches reveal the product retailing for $150 in the US market.

Companies such as Asus and Belkin have also made use of MIMO technology on their Pre-N standard hardware. The latter launched its products in the region in mid 2005.
