Logistical race against time at Dubai World Cup

Logistics professionals were working around the clock at the Dubai World Cup to ensure everything ran smoothly.

A huge flock of glamorously dressed women and smartly dressed gentlemen recently gathered at the Nad Al Sheba racecourse for this year’s Dubai World Cup. Known as the richest race meeting in the world, the event has become one of the biggest dates in the Middle East’s sporting calendar. Whilst contestants are racing against time to win a share of the generous prize money, a host of logistics professionals are working around the clock behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Organisers selected express delivery company TNT as official courier sponsor of the Dubai World Cup with responsibilities including the delivery of invitations, marketing material and contracts. TNT has handled the role in previous years too. “The task of handling distribution for such a large scale event is immense,” said Bryan Moulds, country general manager, TNT UAE. “Our relationship with the Dubai World Cup has lasted several years now, so we ensure efficient delivery and smooth operations by building on past experience and hiring employees dedicated to the account.”

The crystal trophies awarded to race winners were amongst the items being transported by TNT. “The trophies are expensive and fragile, so careful handling is essential,” continued Moulds. “We arrange special packaging such as bubble or sponge wrapping to minimise the risk of damage. The time factor is also important because jockeys and trainers are constantly moving from location to location, so we must reach them on time.”

Of course, the Dubai World Cup relies on efficient transportation of horses from around the world too. The animals travel on Emirates SkyCargo’s Airbus A310-300F freighters, equipped with onboard stables. The air stables are roomier and more comfortable than conventional stalls. Throughout the journey, care was taken to ensure that the horses were stress-free, provided with ample food and water, and kept in hygienic conditions.
