Lucent Technologies has appointed Talmage Bursh as the president for its Middle East and Africa operations. In his role as president, Bursh will be responsible for leading Lucent's MEA sales and services operations, providing leadership to the wider business in the region.

He replaces Ray Adams who has been leading the region for the past two years. A graduate from Stanford University, Bursh began his career at Lucent Technologies in 1979. Prior to his current appointment, he was a senior executive in Lucent Worldwide Services and also performed as technical support services vice-president, where he provided maintenance and technical support for all of Lucent's products in the North America, and Caribbean and Latin America regions.

"The Middle East and Africa is an area that is growing and represents a tremendous opportunity for Lucent,” says Bursh. “I look forward to working with the service providers in this region to build the kinds of communications infrastructure that will help the economies of the countries in this region grow as they strive to improve the lives of people throughout the regions.”

Meanwhile, the market speculation of Lucent and Alcatel merger remains strong. Lucent is unable to talk about the move except that the two vendors are engaged in discussions about a potential merger of equals that is intended to be priced at market value. Lucent says there can be no assurances that any agreement will be reached or that a transaction will be consummated. The vendor says it cannot disclose any more information until an agreement is reached or the discussions are terminated.
