Tough action on new laws

Consultants that don’t comply with changes to building inspections being introduced by Dubai Municipality have been warned that “serious action will be taken against them”.

Consultants that don’t comply with changes to building inspections being introduced by Dubai Municipality have been warned that “serious action will be taken against them”.

Consultants will now be responsible for any lapse in construction, quality of materials and safety measures on sites across Dubai. Under the new rules they will also have to follow DM guidelines and submit their reports on a checklist regarding construction progress.

Emad Farid, technical coordinator of the buildings department at DM, said: “Action will be taken against any consultant that does not comply. And if consultants and contractors don’t follow the instructions we will take steps to shut them down.”

The move is designed to ensure improved quality, fewer accidents and higher standards of building work. Ian Burns, regional manger for property at Hyder Consulting Middle East, believes the changes will only lead to confusion: “Consultants will be looking at other people’s projects. But because they would be coming in cold, it could lead to a lack of understanding,” he said.
