Microsoft will release a free service this summer, which will help parents track their children’s online activity.

According to Microsoft, Windows Live Family Security Setting will allow concerned parents to filter websites and receive regular activity reports. The firm also plans to give parents the option to control the content received via e-mail, instant messaging and blogs.

Companies such as Trend Micro and McAfee already include similar child tracking software in their security products. Microsoft also offers a similar service via its US-based MSN premium web service, however this – unlike its upcoming global Windows Live offering – is a paid-for service.

Windows Live is part of Microsoft’s efforts to combine a variety of web services such as e-mail, instant messaging, search capabilities and online security. Though Windows Live is currently in beta testing, the service is set to launch in the second half of this year.

The Family Security service is fully available to users running Windows XP SP2 and will be compatible with the company’s upcoming Windows Vista operating system.
