Syrian post production house, 2Black, recently invested in an Axio HD system. It also ramped up its storage from 1.5 T/bytes to 3.7 T/bytes to accommodate the demands of HD productions. The new system will enable the post house to attract more business from Syrian production houses.
“We had another Matrox system that we had purchased about eight years ago,” says Amir Namo, editor and compositor at 2Black. “When we went to Morocco with director, Hatem Ali, to work on his Ramadan series, Moulouk Al-Tawaef, we faced a problem with the system. We got a replacement within six days from Digital Image, Matrox’s reseller in the region. We liked the system so much that we decided to upgrade to the HD version.”
The upgrade to HD was very simple, says Mohamed Dafer, managing director of Digital Image. “In terms of the Matrox, they merely had to switch off the system, unplug the SD bob and replace it with a HD bob. The Axio cards inside the system do not change,” he explains.
2Black was particularly impressed with the system’s ease of use. Namo was on location with the production crew in a Moroccan desert when his system broke down. Any issues with the new system would have cost both companies huge losses. “They didn’t need to convert anything as the new Axio products are all backwards compatible. I did worry that they would call and complain that they couldn’t make it work but the only call I got from them was about 45 days later and it was to buy more storage and to say that they wanted to upgrade to HD,” says Dafer of Digital Image.
Namo was also impressed with the colour correction feature. “What I created with this was so good that everyone who saw the final product asked us if it was shot on film. Since there are a lot of shoots happening in Syria, having this system has truly encouraged a lot of big productions to come to us and it has been good for our business,” he adds.
2Black is currently working on a new HD series titled Al-Hiwar, directed by Najdat Anzour. The show will be broadcast next Ramadan.
