Bahrain calls for spectrum comments

Bahrain's telecommunications regulatory authority has called for comments on the kingdom's future spectrum policy

Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) have invited comments on proposals concerning the kingdom’s future spectrum policy. The joint consultation invites thoughts on the overall principles of spectrum management policy, issues of spectrum pricing such as auctions and “beauty contests”, trials, and spectrum requirements for services such as WiMax, fixed wireless access, and public and private mobile communications.

With emerging wireless technologies, such as WiMax, requiring different spectrum needs, the consultation is hoping for views on how to chart what it terms a “long-term policy for Bahrain in this area.”

Andreas Avgousti, general director of the TRA, is inviting manufacturers, services providers and consumers to offer their comments on the issues.

“The results of this consultation will influence the long-term development and rollout of wireless technologies in Bahrain. The decisions taken now will be with us for a long time and their impact will be very significant, given that the number of licences to be issued for spectrum are by their nature limited,” Avgousti comments.

The consultation process is open until December 21, with the full contents available for viewing on the TRA’s website. Aided by feedback, the final spectrum policy plan will be published along with a report on comments received.

Last month, the TRA began a consultation process inviting views on the dominance of Bahrain’s incumbent Batelco. The deadline was set for today, and on the basis of the feedback the TRA will issue a final decision on whether the operator should be forced to provide certain access services to other licensed operators.
