Google unveils new global base

Aiming to create a global information village, Google has unveiled Google Base – a free service that allows users across the globe to submit any type of information and add a description so other users can easily access it.

This allows users who don’t have a web site or blog the opportunity to instantaneously post items such as articles, poetry or photos online for viewing by a worldwide audience.

“This beta version of Google Base is another small step toward our goal, creating an online database of easily searchable, structured information," stated Bindu Reddy, Google product manager and author of an official Google blog.

According to its official Google Base site, the firm’s service allows users to post ‘all types of online and offline information, and images’. The firm also revealed that it might make relevant information searchable on Google Base, Google Search and on its shopping comparison site - Froogle.

The firm claims Google Base is unique because it lets users enter their own keywords. “Rather than impose specific schemas and structures on the world, Google Base suggests attributes and item types based on popularity, which you can use to define and attach your own labels and attributes to each data item,” explained Reddy.

The firm reckons this feature makes it easier for users to quickly find information using labels and keywords to narrow down their queries.

Currently, Google Base allows users to upload one item at a time or a number of items at once. At present, there is no limit on how many items users can send however the database currently restricts the number of images users can upload in each submission to ten.

If users want to share their videos online, Google Base also provides a link to the firm’s recently launched Google Video – a new beta service that allows users to upload videos of any length or size.

Users can check out the new beta version of Google Base at http://base.google.com. Currently, all global users can browse the new site, however in order to publish items, users are required to open a Google account.
