ABB powers ahead and strikes big deals in Bahrain and Qatar

Engineering powerhouse is set to increase transmission capacity on region’s over-streched electricity grid networks

Swiss-Swedish engineering group, ABB, has won a US $170 million (QR619 million) contract from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), to expand the country’s power grid.

The contract includes 12 substations, and power cables for use in Qatar’s Phase VI grid expansion project — a countrywide effort to increase power in newly developed as well as existing areas of high growth, where electricity demand is greatest.

“Power demand in Qatar and the entire gulf region is increasing rapidly, and we are pleased to support growth here,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s power technologies division.

ABB said it won the contract because of the reliability and safety of its equipment, and its ability to meet the short delivery times.

The Phase VI expansion is scheduled for completion by summer 2007. Under the terms of the contract, ABB will carry out engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the substations and associated 132kV and 66kV cabling. In total, ABB will add 127 km of high-voltage power cables to Qatar’s power grid.

The deal is the latest project in a series of orders in the
Middle East for ABB. The company has also scooped a $27
million contract in Bahrain to strengthen the country’s electricity grid.

Under the terms of the turnkey contract, ABB will
supply three new 220kV GIS substations: At the Bahrain Financial Harbour, the power plant at Sitra and the residential area of Buquwwah.

The substations will be engineered, manufactured and commissioned by the end of July 2007.
