DUBAI Municipality is to go wireless using Cisco solutions. A wireless network based on Cisco’s Integrated Wireless Network Suite will be deployed at the Municipality’s head office in Deira, Dubai.

The organisation hopes to complete the implementation at its head office by mid-January next year and plans to eventually create wireless networks in the majority of its 110 offices across Dubai.

“The concept of mobility is very important within our organisation,” said Abdulla Al Madani, head of network services at the Municipality’s IT department.

“This will not change the infrastructure of the municipality but it will introduce a new culture of virtual desks whereby people can have access to the network wherever they are,” he went on to say.

Madani stated that Cisco has not been confirmed as the
chosen technology provider for the implementation of wireless networks across the municpality’s other offices, as the Municipality is “always open to competition.”

The Municipality has had wireless hotspots in its head office for the past two years. It chose Cisco — which already provides routing techonology for the Municipality — after auditing solutions from several other vendors.

The implementation is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2007.

“Dubai Municipality is a dynamic organisation with a tremendous requirement for streamlined IT and network infrastructure solutions,” said Abdul Hakim Malik, director of IT department, Dubai Municipality.

“Cisco’s Integrated Wireless Network portfolio met the criterion that was being sought by Dubai Municipality for the wireless network at our head office. Moreover the scalability, security, manageability and control that Cisco solutions provided were unmatched,” he added.

The Cisco Integrated Wireless Network is an evolution of the Cisco Structured Wireless Aware Network (SWAN) strategy and consists of two enterprise-class WLAN solutions: the Cisco-distributed WLAN solution and the Cisco-centralised WLAN solution.

These solutions are based on Cisco’s recently acquired Airespace product portfolio, which includes the Cisco Aironet 1000 Series Lightweight Access Points; the Cisco 2000 Series, 4100 Series and 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controllers; Cisco Wireless Control System; and the Cisco Wireless Location Appliance.

“We welcome the decision by Dubai Municipality to implement Cisco’s Integrated Wireless Network, one of the most innovative and comprehensive suites of WLAN in the industry,” said Samer Al Kharrat, general manager, Gulf region and Pakistan, Cisco Systems.

“Our solution will address almost all the network deployment requirement scenarios of Dubai Municipality, be it software enhancements, scalability features, security capabilities, hardware advances, or wired and wireless integration enhan-cements,” he continued.

“Our relationship with Dubai Municipality forms the core of Cisco’s public sector strategy in the Gulf region,” he added.
