AlanDick to install five-channel FM station for Qatar radio station
Qatar Broadcasting Station has awarded a contract to AlanDick Middle East to design, supply and install a complete five-channel high power FM transmission system that includes radio studio/transmitter equipment, spares and training.
Qatar Broadcasting Station, a state-run radio station, has awarded a joint contract to AlanDick Middle East and Salam Media Cast to design, supply and install a complete five-channel high power FM transmission system that includes radio studio/transmitter equipment, spares, training and commissioning work. The project is intended to consolidate the company’s FM operations that are scattered across the country, to a single site in Al Kisah, which is close to Qatar’s capital, Doha. The installation will also bring wider coverage and better reception to Qatar residents.
“Qatar Broadcasting operates a few existing FM transmission systems around the country,” says Skandakkumar, broadcast manager for AlanDick Middle East. “It now wants to consolidate these FM operations into a single site.”
Under the agreement, AlanDick Middle East is delivering a 150m guyed mast, a 12-tier, 48-panel FM antenna system, and ten 10kW FM transmitters for five channels, operating on active reserve configuration, five-channel FM combiner, PIE Bay, a 12 stereo channel microwave system, associated RF components and electrical equipment required for the system. The omnidirectional antenna will offer roughly 90km of coverage, which encompasses the whole of Qatar.
“The site where the 150m mast will be installed is currently crowded with both medium and shortwave antennas,” says Skandakumar. “We had to do a precise site survey to find a location for the new guyed mast. The engineering team may have to retune some of the existing medium wave transmission systems that Qatar Broadcasting already operates at the site subsequent to the commissioning of the new FM transmission system,” he adds.
Although the station will initially broadcast five channels, it will have the capacity to run a sixth channel in the future.
