Local laptops for Oman

Computer Xpress, one of Oman’s leading local PC assemblers, is preparing to add notebooks to its growing product portfolio. Computer Xpress is currently building relationships with distributors capable of providing it with the barebone units and components it requires to make this move.

“Intel said to us at a recent show in Oman that it would give us support if we decided to move into assembling laptops. We have had a lot of interest so far, but we need to source the right components at the right price. Oman is a small market, so we are not able to place large orders, and a lot of what we have been offered at present has not been cost effective to purchase,” said John Raj, IT manager at Computer Xpress.

While Computer Xpress has already established itself as a major IT player in Oman, Raj believes that continued investment in the Sultanate by major vendors will help accelerate the deployment of advanced IT infrastructures. Demand for notebooks is already climbing and Computer Xpress, which has strong relationships with a bevy of major IT vendors, is now looking for a long-term supply partner.

“We have a backlog of customers that we have been promising to build laptops for, so we are ready to buy straight away. We would have to start off on a trial basis buying units in low volumes, but hopefully with business taking off we will be able to increase this figure,” added Raj.

There is much more to Computer Xpress than pure PC assembly. The company has launched an internet café business venture in Oman called CyberXpress and already provides ‘door-to-door’ services for its clients. As well as on site services, the company also operates its own Computer Xpress Service Centre for customers.
