Union boss slams site deaths

Top construction union boss says that the UAE's high number of construction-related fatalities is unacceptable.

A top construction union boss has slammed the high level of construction-related fatalities in the UAE and warned that it ‘brings shame upon the construction industry’.

“This is an appalling loss of life, there can be no excuse for this level of fatalities, especially given the billions of pounds being poured into construction projects in Dubai,” said Alan Ritchie, general secretary of UK-based UCATT, one of the largest construction unions in Europe.

He added: “Many of these migrant workers will have been supporting their families back home and they will now have to cope with both losing their loved one and having no breadwinner to support them, making it a double tragedy for them. Such a blatant disregard for human life brings shame upon the construction industry.”

Ritchie is a leading construction industry health and safety campaigner and recently visited construction sites in Dubai where UK-based contractors are working.

He said: “It is unacceptable in a civilised society that there is no official recording of accidents and fatalities that occur as a result of working conditions. Employers are being allowed to literally get away with murder.”
