The number of worldwide weblogs (or ‘blogs’) is doubling every five months, with one weblog now created every second, according to blog tracking firm Technorati.

According to the research company's latest ‘State of the Blogosphere’ report, the number of blogs is now more than 14.2 million, a massive leap from the 7.8 million it noted in just March this year.

Blogs are offered freely by many online firms. In most cases users simply sign-up, choose a site design template and then get typing. Photo uploads are increasingly being allowed by blog hosts, with many home-built blogs also incorporating music, video files and even podcast-style commentaries and shows.

The most popular blog site at present is probably Google-owned blogger.com, though Microsoft’s MSN Spaces has also found favour with many users since its launch.

At present no specific blog numbers are available for this region, though blogs are certainly used by many expats to report back to friends and family abroad about their lives. This approach also saves expat users replicating the same ‘life news’ in separate e-mails.

A word of warning though: expat bloggers must always be careful not to write material that may be seen as disparaging the society in which they reside. One Dubai-based blogger recently found this out when her site - 'Secret Dubai Diary' – was blocked by incumbent telco Etisalat.
