Polio cases on the rise

Yemen has confirmed the number of children diagnosed with polio in the country had risen to 326 as it launched a nationwide immunisation campaign.

Health Minister Mohamed Yehia al-Noami said that that tests were being carried out on another 200 suspected cases.

The Arab state, with a population of 19 million, began a three-day drive on Tuesday to immunise more than 3.8 million children under the age of five.

The disease, which mainly affects children, causes irreversible paralysis. Low immunisation rates among children in Yemen have helped the virus spread, according to the World Health Organisation.

Yemen, which last reported polio in 1996, is among about 17 countries free of the disease where it has reappeared in the past two years.
