Norasia begins operations at Jebel Ali Port
Hong Kong-based Norasia Shipping Line has begun to use the Middle East port as a gateway to Europe
Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) has announced the arrival of Chillan, a large container ship from Europe that is the latest addition to the portfolio of Norasia Container Lines. The line began using the Middle East route as a gateway to Europe, with Chillan being the first vessel to enter Jebel Ali Port. The 276 metre long vessel, with a capacity of 5527 TEUs exchanged 2500 container moves at the port.
DPA will now provide a complete range of services to the Norasia fleet on its weekly route through Dubai, which includes nine vessels, two of which have a capacity of 5400 TEUs while the rest of the vessels have a capacity of 5400 TEUs.
“There has been an upsurge in the number of large container vessels arriving at the Jebel Ali Port ever since the port’s expansion and its acquirement of the most sophisticated container handling equipment around. The arrival of Chillan is in keeping with this trend and it is further proof of Dubai’s position as a hub of all major shipping routes,” said Jamal Majid bin Thaniah, CEO, DPA.
The arrival of these larger vessels comes after DPA has installed five tandem gantry cranes, with another five waiting to be installed. The cranes have the capacity to lift 80 tonnes and the ability to load and unload large vessels that have a capacity to carry up to 12,000 containers.
“Globally, the shipping industry is witnessing continued growth in container traffic, and more than 95% of the world’s general cargo is now transported in containers. As a result, shipping lines are progressively increasing vessel size,” Thaniah said.
“This realisation has consistently driven the growth strategies of Dubai Ports, and our state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities as well as our constant upgrading of container handling equipment are testimony to this fact,” he added.
Norasia, which owns Chillan, operates over 90 vessels worldwide. The Hong Kong-based shipping line provides international container shipping services between Europe, North America, the Mediterranean, Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Far East.
