Kuwait refinery open for tenders

State-run refinery Kuwait National Petroleum will invite international contractors to pre-qualify for the construction of a massive new oil refinery, which is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ahmad Al-Jemaaz, director of the refinery project, said that the 630 000 barrels per day facility was about to open for pre-qualification.

A bid evaluation committee has already been established for the contract.

The new refinery project is expected to be completed in 2010, at which point the ageing 200 000-bpd Shuaiba refinery will be shut down.
