Owing to the increase in programme production, Kuwait TV has plans to build a new studio by the first quarter of this year. The new facility will include among other systems, Thomson Grass Valley solutions and Kroma’s Under-Monitor-Displays (UMD).

The facility will be called Studio500 and is intended to be completely digital. It is slated to have more than 60 displays. Speaking about the equipment, Juan Cortes, sales manager, KROMA Telecom, Africa & Middle East says: “As our UMDs are dynamic, the same UMD can be located under monitors in different sizes and then switch from single to double to triple text, as per the customer’s requirements.”

Kroma has also supplied a controller unit, which is designed to handle a maximum of 128 UMD units. “This can be connected to mixing consoles for tally purposes and switching routers. The latter allows the user to instantly update an assignment and label changes, so as to always know the source of the signal, whether it be a CAM1 or a VTR2,” explains Cortes.

He adds that the Kroma DM4100 acts transparently with the MPK protocol. “This enables messages to appear on the UMDs and go directly to them from the router. There is even a dedicated port for this special protocol,” he says.
Part of the solution that Kroma has delivered to Kuwait TV includes a tally matrix activated by contact closure. This is intended to light the tally leds of monitors and also let cameramen know when they are on air.
