BP picked for Iraq oilfield study

British oil major been awarded a contract to conduct research on one of the country's biggest fields.

British oil major BP has been awarded a contract to conduct research on Iraq's Rumaila oilfield, one of the country's biggest fields, the company said.

"BP can confirm that it has been selected by the Iraqi Ministry of Oil to undertake a technical study of selected oil reservoirs in Iraq ... It will focus on the Rumaila oilfield," said a company statement.

The statement did not give the value of the deal, put earlier at around $5 million by industry sources.

A dozen companies, including Royal Dutch/Shell and oil service firms, had bid for a tender for Iraq's first post-war contracts to study boosting output at Rumaila in the south, and the giant Kirkuk field in the north.

"The study will be conducted entirely in the UK by a joint Iraq/BP technical team ... No BP staff will be operating inside Iraq," the statement added.
