Sony iPod rival arrives in region

Sony's long-awaited Vaio Pocket MP3 player has arrived in the Middle East.

Sony's long-awaited Vaio Pocket MP3 player has arrived in the Middle East. Designed to compete head-to-head with portable media devices such as Apple's iPod, the ‘Vaio Pocket’ can hold up to 20,000 songs and is able to store photos.

The Pocket is the first Vaio-branded product to go beyond the conventional limits of IT in that it's not a notebook, a PC or a handheld organiser. Available in 20GB and 40GB versions, the Pocket uses miniature hard disk technology, with Sony quoting a battery life of up to 20 hours of non-stop playback from a single charge.

Able to communicate with both PCs and digital cameras via its cradle charger unit, the Vaio Pocket features a hybrid technology LCD screen for viewing song information and images, while what Sony calls a "bump-textured area" beside its screen allows users to select and activate the Pocket’s on-screen buttons.
