Sony chases videoconferencing business

Sony has signed up Almoe as the sole distributor of its videoconferencing solutions in the UAE. Citing dropping prices the vendor and distributor believe they have the ammunition to take business from more established players in the market such as Polycom and Tandberg.

Almoe and Sony state that prices have fallen to the extent that any business in the UAE can consider buying videoconferencing equipment. That said, the main thrust of their sales efforts will focus on the education, hospitality and healthcare verticals.

“Falling prices in recent years have meant that videoconferencing is moving out of specialist areas and into the mass market,” says Robert Sherman, regional director, Sony Middle East & Africa.

“Videoconferencing will form a greater part of business communications in the future. It will not replace phone calls or visits to clients, but it will become an other option, one that can cut excess travel expenses and also add a more personal touch to phone calls,” he adds.

The companies are hoping to exploit the increasing number of high speed internet users in the UAE as well as the increasing prevalence of high bandwidth networks in corporations. Although a late player into a market dominated by Tandberg and Polycom, Almoe sees scope for growth in the Sony tie-up.

“We are looking to leverage aggressive pricing and the Sony brand to win business. We have high hopes for this partnership,” says Krishna Murthy, general manager of Almoe.
