Mystery surrounds the distribution of Sapphire VGA products from Dubai distributor Future Digital International (FDC). While FDC claims that it is not doing ‘official business’ with Sapphire, resellers are claiming that they can buy Sapphire products from FDC, a major distributor of nVidia graphics solutions.

It seems Dubai’s resellers have known for at least the last week that FDC is distributing or will begin to distribute Sapphire products in the market. Both Carapelli Computers and Hamoor Computers confirmed that Sapphire VGA kit could now be bought from FDC.

Another major reseller gave a different picture but also confirmed that FDC was dealing in Sapphire products. “We got a call from FDC three or four days ago informing us that they would start selling low-end cards, the 9200 and the 9500, as of this week,” said Rakesh Bohra, CEO of Trinity Infotech.

When contacted, FDC’s response was to deny that there was any business between itself and Sapphire. “There is nothing on paper at the moment [between FDC and Sapphire]. There is nothing official, nothing at the moment,” said Taher Kagzi, procurement executive at FDC.

Sapphire’s response was even curter. “No comment,” was the carefully worded statement from the manufacturer’s regional manager, Mohammad Ibrahim.

FDC is the regional distributor for graphics manufacturer XFX, an nVidia partner and rival to Sapphire. FDC also has a strong relationship with nVidia, which may be affected by the news that there is an alleged distribution agreement between Sapphire, a manufacturer of ATi solutions, and FDC. The repercussions of FDC’s move may be felt by the distributor for some time to come.
