Al Jazeera Sports uses Vizrt to broadcast 17th annual Gulf Cup in Doha

Al Jazeera Sports used Vizrt’s Viz|Arena solution to broadcast the 17th Annual Gulf Cup (football) in Doha, held from December 10-24, 2004.

Al Jazeera Sports used Vizrt’s Viz|Arena solution to broadcast the 17th Annual Gulf Cup (football) in Doha, held from December 10-24, 2004. The solution enables a broadcaster to superimpose static or animated 3D graphics over live coverage of a sports event.

Viz|Arena keeps the graphics fixed in place, regardless of camera movement, giving viewers the impression that the virtual reality 3D graphics are part of the live coverage. Al Jazeera used this solution to get real-time distance to the goal, real-time freekick area, speed of the ball as well as offside lines.

Viz|Arena can support upto 16 live cameras, delivering camera tracking data for pan/tilt/zoom and focus. Also, by recording the coverage onto a fast video server, replay animations can be applied which can include trajectories, velocity and speed statistics. The real-time graphics are superimposed onto the pitch or at specific points around the pitch and remain locked to their original positions so that any movement of the camera maintains the illusion of reality.
