Oman launches ADSL service

Oman has launched its high-speed broadband internet service, PowerNet, for all users. The asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service went live this week

Oman has launched its high-speed broadband internet service, PowerNet, for all users. The asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service went live this week, with packages available for home, business, cyber café and educational users.

While ADSL has been available on a trial basis in the Kingdom for some time, this week Omantel, the government-owned telco in Oman, formally launched its Oman PowerNet service, and revealed details of pricing for all customers.

Households will pay a minimum monthly charge of RO12, with a price cap of RO39, which will provide unlimited surf time. For corporate users, the minimum monthly charge is RO120, with additional charge per GB of RO1. A cyber café will pay a monthly rent of RO75 with a price cap of RO250. Educational users such as government schools will pay a flat monthly rate of RO25, supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Education to promote digital culture in schools.

“The new service will enable Omantel subscribers to get into the internet network with high speed,” Mohammed bin Ali Al Wohaibi, executive president of Omantel, told the Times of Oman. “It can perform multi-internet functions and receive telephone calls simultaneously.”
