Distribution giants Tech Data and Almasa have strengthened their management teams. Quentin Cornelius has waved goodbye to Sun distributor Tech Access to join Tech Data, while Amr Atef has arrived in Dubai after a lengthy stint in Egypt at Raya Distribution to take charge of Almasa’s PC and peripherals business.

Amr Atef, commenting on his plans at Almasa, said: “We need to have the optimum structure in place to handle a wider product range and provide enhanced services. We need to build up the customer breadth even further and ensure that growth is achieved in a safe way.”

Atef will also draw upon his experience in Egypt to help Almasa realise its ambition of becoming a genuine pan-regional distribution powerhouse. “The plan is to drive business across the region,” added Atef. “We will have a team based in Dubai handling the GCC and separate structures in place for sales outside this region.”

With product margins still challenging, Atef will also look to streamline the internal cost base to maximise margin potential. Almasa has a strong relationship with HP in the PCs and peripherals business but will also look to strengthen its links to Acer during 2005.

Over at Tech Data, Cornelius takes over as sales director, assuming the position held by Adnan Al-Falah prior to his promotion to managing director earlier this year. Cornelius was previously chief operating officer at Tech Access, Sun Microsystems’ regional channel development partner. His 12-year’s experience in the IT industry also includes seven years with IBM central Africa.

“Tech Data as an organisation is definitely in a growth mode and so this is an exciting time for me to join,” said Cornelius. “We’ve got a winning team here at Tech Data and one of my key objectives will be to sustain the growth momentum and to proactively leverage our advantages, developing the synergies and value that we can deliver across the broad range of vendors we represent.”
