3Com exceeds training targets

Networking vendor 3Com, encouraged by the success of its Middle East training programmes in 2004, plans to keep its foot on the education accelerator in 2005 with the launch of new instructor-led courses to keep channel partners and customers up to speed on its broad product portfolio.

Networking vendor 3Com, encouraged by the success of its Middle East training programmes in 2004, plans to keep its foot on the education accelerator in 2005 with the launch of new instructor-led courses to keep channel partners and customers up to speed on its broad product portfolio.

Scheduled classes and customer training sessions have seen 3Com exceed its 2004 Middle East training targets with more than 250 eager students picking up professional certification from the vendor this year. Using a combination of instructor-led classes, online assessment and exams, 3Com has been busy bringing its channel and customers up to speed in a variety of networking areas including wireless LANs, security solutions and IP telephony.

Wael Fakharany, regional manager at 3Com Middle East, said: “Effective, committed training programmes help to support the rapid deployment and development of advanced networking technology across the region, and the positive feedback that we have received from participants in 2004 validates the strength of our approach.”

Away from its success in Middle East classrooms, 3Com’s global financial performance is coming under increased scrutiny after the vendor issued a profit warning ahead of fiscal 2005 second quarter results due later this month.

The company now expects sales to come in at between US$149m and US$153m, down from its earlier guidance of between US$170m and US$180m. The vendor also expects its gross margins to fall to 35% from a previous guidance of 38% with net losses forecast to come in at between 12 cents to 14 cents per share. 3Com did not divulge any reasons for the warning.

Back in September, 3Com predicted that global sales of its desktop, mobile and server connectivity kit would fall significantly in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. The vendor had hoped that increased sales of its enterprise network products would make up for any shortfall.
