Starwood signs second Algerian property

Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Société de Développement Hotelier, an Algerian/Libyan joint venture, have signed a long-term management agreement under which Starwood will operate the 321-room Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers in Algeria.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Société de Développement Hotelier, an Algerian/Libyan joint venture, have signed a long-term management agreement under which Starwood will operate the 321-room Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers in Algeria.

The Sheraton Oran will be Starwood’s second hotel in Algeria and is expected to open by mid 2005. Starwood first entered the Algerian market in 1999 with the opening of the Sheraton Club des Pins in Algiers, the country’s capital, which quickly established itself as the leading five-star hotel in Algeria.

“We are very proud to expand our partnership with Société de Développement Hotelier,” says Philippe Cassis, senior vice president and director of operations for the Africa and Middle East Region of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “Sheraton will be the first international hotel brand to operate in the city of Oran. This agreement further enhances our commitment to Algeria; and is an important step in the expansion of our brands and portfolio in this region,” adds Cassis.

The Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers will be situated on a 6-acre cliff-top overlooking the Mediterranean, and is 10 minutes away from the city centre of Oran. The 321-room property will offer three restaurants, including a roof-top restaurant and bar, a lobby lounge, poolside café and bar, discotheque, health club and spa, outdoor pool, tennis courts and parking facilities.

The hotel will also offer meeting and conference space, including a main ballroom accommodating up to 850 guests.
Oran is Algeria’s second largest city and the capital of Oran province. It is one of Algeria’s leading ports and a major financial and industrial hub.
