Maxtor has launched its new SATA Ultra16 hard drive kits, aimed squarely at users who want to improve their multimedia and gaming experiences.

Maxtor claims the kits include the only retail hard drives to feature both a 16MB buffer and “best-in-class” 7200rpm performance. The Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives are available in capacities of up to 300GB, a capacity that according to Maxtor's calculations allows consumers to store 5,000 hours of MP3s, 230,000 digital JPEG photos or 144 high-definition video games.

“Customers continue to rely on Maxtor’s innovative storage solutions. Our retail product line, including our award-winning Maxtor OneTouch external drive, has become the industry benchmark in desktop performance, reliability and backup,” said Stacey Lund, executive director of Maxtor’s Consumer Products Group. “We take pride in offering a desktop hard drive solution for everyone from extreme gamers to cost-conscious consumers.”

Maxtor’s Ultra16 kits include an installation guide with step-by-step instructions, a SATA cable, mounting screws and Maxtor’s own MaxBlast installation software. This application partitions and formats the drive for use, and helps uses to copy files from their old hard drive to the new Maxtor version.

Maxtor’s new 250GB and 300GB SATA Ultra16 hard drive kits are available for $249 and $299 respectively. Parallel ATA Ultra16 kits meanwhile will be available before the end of the year.
