Google Desktop Search is go

Google has launched a new search tool to help users hunt out information on their own PCs.

Google has launched a new search tool to help users hunt out information on their own PCs.

The company’s long-awaited Google Desktop Search applet is now freely available as a 400kb download from http://desktop.google.com. It allows users to search all their computers’ files, including Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail messages, AOL chat logs and it even indexes Internet Explorer's web cache.

Desktop Search uses the same browser interface as Google’s standard online search engine and also adds a desktop tab to the Google home page. Search queries can combine the results of either local or internet searches, plus Desktop Search can also save a history of local searches, should you forget to save the results and need to run a search twice. Google Desktop Search works with Internet Explorer and Opera 7.5.

Google Desktop Search is just one of the desktop engines to be featured in next month’s Windows Middle East ‘Here’s How’ section, along with competitor programs from Blinkx, Diskmeta, Lookout software and more.
