Plextor unveils DVD double

Plextor has become the latest optical drive vendor to jump aboard the dual-layer bandwagon with the launch of its internal PX-716A double layer, dual-format DVD burner and an equivalent external version, the PX-716UF.

The PX-716A is an internal burner and therefore suited to upgraders and system builders. Its quoted burn speeds include 16x for DVD ‘+’ and ‘-‘ (plus and minus) format media, and 4x for DVD + R DL (double layer media). Plextor claims it can also write to x8 media at x16 speed. The PX-716A comes bundled with the firm’s PlexTools Professional and five further software packages. It is set to retail at around $166.

Plextor’s PX-716UF meanwhile offers the same quoted burn speeds, meaning it should be capable of burning four hours of high quality MPEG 2/DVD, up to 8.5GB, in under six minutes. This silver drive can be connected to a PC or notebook via USB 2.0 or IEEE1394 (FireWire) and will retail in this region for $319.

Plextor is not the only optical drive manufacturer to launch a 16x dual-layer version this year, as companies such as BenQ and LG have also hit the market with dual-standard and Super Multi (all format) versions.
