Imation is shipping new 1GB and 2GB USB Flash drives for the Middle East market. The thumb drives, which store data the equivalent of up to three standard CD-R's – can now be stored in a device of half the size of a standard matchbox.

According to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Flash Drive Alliance (UFDA) USB flash drives are expected to become the number one removable solid-state storage format in 2005.

Industry analysts such as Gartner Dataquest, Semico Research and Web-Feet Research provide this new USB flash drive market forecast. This data shows that between 67 and 120 million USB flash drives worth up to US$3 billion are expected to ship worldwide next year.

“With the growing storage capacities reliability and data integrity becomes a key factor for the acceptance of all kinds of storage devices using solid state technologies. USB flash drives are increasingly popular among people who need to carry big files from one computer to the other,” says Alvaro Valdez, Regional Manager, Imation Middle East & East Africa.

Targeted at business users and consumers, the new Imation USB 2.0 Swivel Flash Drives feature a swivel cap design, delivering an easy, portable means of protecting, transferring and sharing digital information.

The vendor's 1GB USB drive, priced at US$290 weighs in less than 15 grams -- about the size of an AA battery. The drives read at 8MB/sec and write data at 7MB/sec.

By plugging directly into the USB port of any computer, Imation USB 2.0 Swivel Flash Drives can easily store digital information such as documents, music, presentations, photos and more. The USB standard supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices and is gradually replacing SCSI as the dominant peripheral interface standard.

Optional public/private drive partitioning and password protection software are available for free download from the vendor’s site. The solid state data storage device supports both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 formats.
