Thales has won a multi-million dollar contract to supply Emirates Media Inc. (EMI) with a turnkey solution for a new medium-wave radio broadcasting centre in Abu Dhabi. The turnkey radio broadcasting solution for EMI’s Dhabiyya II project includes 800 kW medium wave transmitter type S7HP, compatible for future upgrades to digital operation in DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) mode; a directional antenna system (Lambda/2) including a 95 metre tower; auxiliary equipment and a new transmitter building.
The Dhabiyya II project is scheduled for completion early next year and follows the successful completion of the Dhabiyya I project — a medium wave site — in June 2003, where Thales worked in close collaboration with the EMI client team to deliver equipment in record time.
“We are proud to have been selected by Emirates Media Inc., and are looking forward to executing this project with the same outstanding teamwork as last year,” says Willi Tschol, head of Thales Radio Broadcasting activities. “The realisation of such a challenging project is a clear testimonial to the continuing importance worldwide of AM broadcasting,” he adds.
This new medium wave station will be situated only one kilometre away from the existing Dhabiyya short-wave site, a high power station in service since 1985 and equipped with 4 x 500 kW short wave transmitters and 48 short wave antennas.
