Moroccan broadcaster begins HD production

As part of a massive expansion plan brought on by the deregulation of the Moroccan television industry, state broadcaster Radio Télévision Marocain (RTM) has installed Accom’s Abekas Dveous/MX universal-format digital video effects system.

Taking advantage of Dveous/MX’s support for all standard and high-definition formats, RTM has designed new studios for production in HD and is aiming to standardise on HD as a production format in the near future.

“Chief executive Faycal Larichi together with technical managers, Kasmi Allal and Mohamed Lazrak took the decision to switch to HD production when they became aware of Dveous/MX’s capabilities,” says Hassan Eddahbi of system integrators LTS France. “Originally RTM specified the new studio for SD production, but when they realised that Dveous/MX also supported HD, they went for this. Since deregulation, Morocco’s state broadcasters are aware of the need to be keenly competitive, so the adoption of HD production is a very progressive move,” explains Eddahbi.

With two new studios under construction in the Moroccan capital Rabat and two additional new studios planned in Casablanca, RTM will be substantially boosting production capacity beyond the current facilities. The expansion represents a second phase of modernisation after RTM’s switch from analogue to digital production over the past two years.

“Because the Dveous/MX can perform well with all the formats, it gave us the opportunity to be adventurous with the strategy for our new studio,” says Allal. “We want to take the most forward-looking approach to this stage of our development, and producing in HD for Morocco’s SD networks means we can exploit the quality advantages of HD production while positioning RTM well for the future.”

The Abekas Dveous/MX supports all SD and HD formats and allows users to transfer effects and styles instantly between formats. With an identical user interface in all formats, the system is immediately familiar to the large community of Dveous operators.

“It’s been our strategy to make our products capable of working equally well in SD and HD so that our customers can adopt a flexible, fast-moving approach to working with the new formats,” comments Accom’s CEO, Junaid Sheikh. “RTM’s decision to move to HD production is an excellent example of a broadcaster benefiting from this strategy, both to satisfy present requirements and prepare for further growth.”
