Wireless summit in December

The region’s first WiFi & WiMax Summit and the 2nd PDA & Smartphone Expo 2004 are scheduled to be held in Dubai from December 5-6.

The region’s first WiFi & WiMax Summit and the 2nd PDA & Smartphone Expo 2004 are scheduled to be held in Dubai from December 5-6.

With support from the Dubai Internet City, Dubai e-government, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry, WiFi Alliance and the WiMax Forum, the event promises to bring in wireless technology manufacturers, GSM operators, end-users, regulators and hotspot managers.

Industry estimates say with over six million wireless data subscribers and a predicted 50% of all wireless industry revenues to be attributed to wireless data services by 2010, the race is on to build the next generation of data networks.

The organisers Arabcom Group say topics such as overcrowding and consolidation of the WLAN industry; commercial viability public hotspots; wireless ISPs (WISP); WiMax and WiFi standards and network infrastructure will be covered through interactive panel discussions and case studies.

Among the highlights of the summit will be an exclusive presentation of future wireless hotel business models by an IT hospitality services vendor. Arabcom is offering free registration to hotel, airport and property owners with over 1000 square metres of customer service area.

One of the key segments of the event will cover worldwide interoperability for microwave access, better known as WiMax, a new wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) technology that will connect 802.11 (WiFi) hotspots to the internet and provide a wireless extension to cable and DSL for last mile (last km) broadband access.

802.16 provides up to 50 km of linear service area range and allows users connectivity without a direct line of sight to a base station.

The technology also provides shared data rates up to 70 Mbit/s, which, according to WiMax proponents, is enough bandwidth to simultaneously support more than 60 businesses with T1-type connectivity and hundreds of homes at DSL-type connectivity.

Running in parallel to the WiFi & WiMax Summit will be the 2nd PDA & Smartphone Expo. After its debut last year this year’s expo will feature new handhelds. Participation from international and regional vendors, distributors, resellers and end-users is expected.

This year’s summit will feature a special section on Smartphone technology and solutions from Microsoft, Palm, Symbian, Linux and RIM-based platforms.
