Emirates SkyCargo ups freighter fleet
Emirates ramps up its burgeoning cargo operation further with the addition of two new planes.
Emirates SkyCargo has added a Boeing 747-400F, leased from Atlas Air, to its freighter fleet.
The addition boosts Emirates SkyCargo’s freighter fleet to six planes, all Boeing 747s. With its capacity of 124 tonnes, the new aircraft takes the cargo carrier’s total freighter capacity to nearly 700 tonnes.
The Boeing 747-400F boasts four independently controlled air-conditioned zones that can be maintained at different temperature levels. This allows the storage of pharmaceuticals, fish, meat and vegetables on the same flight without risk of spoiling or contamination.
"Initially, we intend to deploy the new freighter on our existing routes to Shanghai and Hong Kong and the new Johannesburg service," says Ram Menen, senior VP, cargo, Emirates. "We are also exploring the possibilities of launching more freighter destinations."
