Epson is in the product zone this week, as it showcases its entire range of business and consumer products to Gitex visitors.

"Gitex is an important event and an education in that we can showcase our new technology," says Khalil El-Dalu, general manager, Epson Middle East.

"We have different zones on our stand: we have our mono and color laser zone, where we display for instance the printer range from A4-A3, the photo zone, and then we have our all-in-one machines, which are becoming very popular," says El-Dalu.

"We also have our projector range on show, and in our business zone we showcase solutions such as archiving solutions, image management and document management - showing how to retrieve, save documents, and how to make your office a paperless place."

Epson is also aiming some presentations specifically at retail clients, displaying its dot matrix and retail technology offerings. Although dot matrix technology is far from new, El-Dalu says it's still an important part of Epson's range. "Dot matrix is the technology that we say doesn't want to die. There is a big demand," explains El-Dalu. "Every year there is market expectation that either this market is stable or is going to decline, but we see good demand in the Middle East. I'd say it's increasing every year by an average of 12-15%."

As projectors gradually move out of the business sector and become equally suited to home use, Epson is responding by focusing on its recently launched EMP-TW200 model. El-Dalu is keen that visitors see this device working under show conditions in order to prove its performance. "We want to show this under light conditions. We'll also show a projector for the education market, to be used in schools, called the EMP-81," he adds.

As for Epson's MFD and photo printer offerings, the firm is focusing on models with Bluetooth wireless technology on-board. "This is being demonstrated by our Photo R300, a standalone photo printer with a Bluetooth option, which offers PC-less printing, includes PictBridge technology, and accepts different digital camera memory cards," says El-Dalu.

"Of course for business the colour laser is becoming very popular now, due to the cost per page, which is very important. Many decision makers are now thinking of changing from mono lasers to colour lasers," says El-Dalu, adding "The photo market is definitely important as well and we are displaying large format products. Finally, we're encouraging visitors to bring their own images and print these on our stand, so readers should bring their digital cameras and use them with our products."

El-Dalu is also looking to the future, as some Epson products being shown have yet to be released. Showing unreleased products to the channel is a valuable feedback mechanism, claims El-Dalu. "We ask our partners: "If we launch certain products, what do you think the acceptance will be in the Middle East?" The Middle East is different from Europe, it's also different from the US market and Asia.
