D-Link targets digital home market

Networking technology provider, D-Link, is targeting the fledgling digital home market in the region with demonstrations of its wireless media player at Gitex 2004.

Networking technology provider, D-Link, is targeting the fledgling digital home market in the region with demonstrations of its wireless media player at Gitex 2004.

DSM-320, the latest addition to the supplier’s media lounge family of products, is a stand-alone unit that sits within a home entertainment centre and connects to televisions and stereos via standard A/V or S-video cables.

Using a remote control and TV interface, it is then connected to a home network via a 802.11g high-speed wireless link, or if preferred, through standard Ethernet cabling.

With support for MP3, WMA and WAV audio files, users can listen to music play lists such as M3U and PLS on their stereo system.

Video format compatibility, meanwhile, allows customers to watch stored videos in MPEG1/2/4, AVI, or Xvid format on televisions or view slideshows of their photos in JPEG, JPEG2000, TIFF, GIF, BMP or PNG formats.

“The wireless media player gives users access to more content than ever before while eliminating the need to be seated in one fixed location,” says Wilson Xavier, business manager, D-Link Middle East.

The wireless media player is IEEE compliant and supports the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) standard, designed for device recognition. The wireless connection is secured with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) 64/128-bit encryption, D-Link says.

D-Link is also using the show to persuade existing users of its ADSL products to upgrade their hardware to be compatible with next generation broadband standards, such as ADSL 2 and ADSL 2+.

The two new standards have been designed to double or triple internet speeds offered by current ADSL services, and D-Link expects compatible products to become available in the region soon.

However, ADSL products not designed to handle the standards will require replacement or upgrades. Also on show, meanwhile, is the provider’s outdoor 2.4GHz wireless access point.
