Foundry shows way in 10GBE

Network vendor gains lead in 10Gigabit Ethernet and deploys WAN acces routers in the region.

Foundry is using this year's show to push ahead in the emerging 10Gigabit bandwidth networking market. The vendor claims a lead on the sector that it puts down to its pioneering support of the technology.

"We are recognised as the number one in 10Gigabit, significant market share, with 40% in shipments and revenue and this is important in the Middle East, as customers here very much want best of breed products and to get to the next stage very quickly," says Andy Palmer, VP & MD Foundry Networks EMEA.

A report by research firm, the Dell'Oro Group, named Foundry as having leading market share in the 10Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3 market for Q204. The research broke down Foundry's market share as 43.7% of port shipments and 47.1% of revenue.

Chief among the 10Gigabit Ethernet products being shown by Foundry is the BigIron MG8 10GBE switch, which delivers 40 Gbytes/s of inter and intra-line card switching per-formance per slot.

Palmer also highlights wireless, voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and access routers as key product areas for Foundry at the show. The vendor has deployed its AccessIron wide area network (WAN) access routers in the region, which can incorporate security features such as firewall and VPN.

"We are leveraging account control to spread our product range out," says Palmer. "Access routing and also wireless and VoIP are opportunities to add more to the overall proposition we make to the customers. Customers who buy Layer 2 and 3 switches from us, come to us asking if we do products in internet routing and wireless, so we fill out the product line. We have to be realistic, there are big companies in the access routing space but the key for us is to keep account control. If you have products at the access, edge and core and you do a good job, it's very hard to lose the account," he adds.

Palmer pulls out Foundry's commitment to quality as its main strong point in the region, along with its early focus in the region.

"One of the good things about Foundry is that, very early on, we decided to focus seriously on the region. It's a vibrant market and we have watched our business grow here very successfully in the last six years. We have many of the same team members in place that we had when we started in the region and that continuity helps us build trust with customers and strengthens us in the region," explains Palmer.

Foundry is also talking up its early support for IPv6 products, which includes hardware enhancements for the NetIron 40G router and BigIron MG8 switch. Foundry's IPv6 solution supports a full suite of unicast and multicast services and protocols including IPv4 to IPv6 transitioning technologies to support the co-existence of the two protocols. The technology also supports dual stack operation and 6-4 tunnelling. Foundry uses Terathon modules to bring IPv6 support to its high-end network devices.
