Virtual reality with Extreme

Network users flock to see Extreme's innovative modular XOS switch operating system in action.

Extreme is seeing huge interest in its modular XOS switching operating system. The UNIX-based solution has been developed as an open platform and Extreme is pitching it as an adaptable foundation to help enterprises take their networks into the future. The XOS appears in Extreme products such as the BlackDiamond 10808.

Extreme has developed XOS in response to what it sees as increasing demands being placed on IT staff. The vendor emphasises that network managers will need to extend their networks' size over the next few years and will require greater scope and functionality to exploit opportunities such as wireless and convergence. Extreme envisages the network extending to embrace new devices and applications such as IP phones, scanners, security cameras, RFID tags, PDAs and video conferencing.

"Businesses can take new functionality on-board without impacting uptime with Extreme's XOS switches," says Chris Moore, regional manager, Extreme Middle East & North Africa. "XOS is the Layer 3 switching industry's leading modular operating system providing non-stop operation with open interfaces for extending the functionality of the network," he adds.

XOS brings virtual routing and switching to a device or appliance, essentially partitioning a single switch into multiple mini-switches. This ensures that on a switch with multiple VLANs, an attack on one VLAN need not bring down the others. This capability is designed to help network managers collapse and simplify networks without compromising security.
Extreme is also emphasising other proprietary technologies that make its products stand out from the crowd, as well as an endpoint security solution from Extreme's Purple partner, Sygate Technologies.

"The Unified Access architecture provides enterprise wide access over wired and wireless infrastructure in the most secure way possible and Security Framework provides protection against both internal and external security threats," explains Moore.

The Middle East is a key market for Extreme and the vendor is carrying out activities to cement its position. These include solutions demonstrations with a number of its Purple partners.
"Most of our competitors tend to focus on supplying cheap products with the best marketing brochures but the more demanding users in the Middle East need solutions that can provide high performance, high availability and scalability within a very secure network environment. This is Extreme Networks' speciality and we will continue to thrive and grow in the Middle East," says Moore.

Extreme Networks is also demonstrating its Alpine modular aggregation switches, Summit fixed edge switches and Altitude access points.

“Extreme Networks lives the word inventive from the way we do business, to the way we think about innovation and the way we support our partners and customers,” concludes Moore.
