Dubai CIO Summit 2004
The Middle East Chief Information Officer Summit (MECIO 2004), a forum for the region’s IT heads, will held in Dubai on October 10, preceded by the Gartner Masterclass on October 9 .
The CIO summit at the Fairmont Hotel, Dubai, will focus on the changing role of the CIO, which is evolving from technical implementation into strategic planning.
“The CIO has become the most challenging and dynamic factor in the new economy,” says Tony Murphy, vice president of Gartner.
It is estimated that companies worldwide are spending $US52 billion a year on reengineering, of which $US40 billion goes annually into information technology. As the CIO's role shifts from the technical business of data processing to the more broadly conceived job of 'knowledge management,' managing this knowledge become vital to the success of the organisation.
Yet there is ambivalence among today's CIOs about the changing nature of their jobs. Many were trained in engineering and computer science and identify themselves as high-level technical experts rather than integral to the business itself.
Now in its third year, the topics included in the MECIO Summit 2004 are based on primary research conducted by the organisers, MEGA, from February to May this year in face-to-face interviews with key regional CIOs.
"The Middle East market and its enterprise organisations continue to grow and diversify. Companies need to be aware of the importance of a responsive IT infrastructure to react to the changing business climate," says Joseph Hanania, managing director for HP Middle East.
The CIO Summit is all about sharing IT experiences and lessons from around the region, and learning about how best value technology can complement any business' roadmap for future demands and the inherent responsibilities within an evolving environment," he adds.
The summit will be inaugurated on 10 Oct by Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, CEO of Dubai Internet City and director general of the Dubai International Financial Centre.
“The Middle East CIO Summit provides an excellent platform for senior IT professionals to discuss strategies that can positively contribute to their own organization's development and success in today’s rapidly changing economic environment,” says Sulaiman.
