D-Link touts "truly wireless" digital centre at Gitex

D-Link claims to have launched the first truly wireless media player, which it will showcase at Gitex 2004 show and hopes will form the centre of digital homes across the Middle East.

D-Link claims to have launched the first truly wireless media player, which it will showcase at Gitex 2004 show and hopes will form the centre of digital homes across the Middle East.

Aimed at users excited by the idea of streaming multimedia content around their home over a fast wireless network, D-Link’s DSM-320 Wireless Media Player is the latest addition to its ‘Media Lounge’ range and supports almost all audio, video, and image formats that can be stored on a PC.

"The new wireless media player gives users access to more content than ever before while eliminating the need to be seated in one fixed location," said Wilson Xavier, business manager for D-Link-ME. "This product is a great example of networking technology evolving to create a convergence of various useful everyday components and devices. Using the DSM-320 friends and family can gather together and watch thousands of easy-to-navigate digital photos, or watch their favorite movies on a big-screen with surround sound if they wish. All this from the comfort of their living room. Multimedia entertainment on a PC or laptop can’t match that experience."

With support for MP3, WMA and WAV audio files, users can listen to music play lists such as M3U and PLS on the stereo system. Video format compatibility meanwhile, lets users watch stored videos in MPEG1/2/4, AVI, or Xvid format on TV, or enjoy slideshows of their favorite photos in JPEG, JPEG2000, TIFF, GIF, BMP or PNG formats. Access to these options comes via a graphical TV Interface and included remote control.

D-Link’s Wireless Media Player is a stand-alone unit that sits within a home entertainment center and connects to a television and/or stereo using standard A/V or S-video cabling. It is then connected to a home network via a 802.11g high-speed (54Mbps) wireless link or alternatively via standard ethernet cabling. The DSM-320 also bundles D-Link’s proprietary Media Server Software for Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP, which compiles digital multimedia content on a user’s network.

The D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player is available across the Middle East immediately, priced $200.
