Computer Zone takes on the Plaza

A new IT mall is set to open in downtown Dubai to take on Computer Plaza and provide the channel with a fresh sales environment.

WiFi Computer Zone, Dubai’s latest project for the IT industry, is set to open its doors to the public over the coming weeks and compete with well-known shopping centres including Computer Plaza. The founder of the plan, Rakkesh Bohra, believes that Dubai’s IT channel is ready to step up a gear and provide consumers with a superior shopping experience.

“There is huge demand for a competitor to Computer Plaza, which is dominated by one company. I have been in the Plaza for a long time and our industry is now ready for retail. This mall, WiFi Computer Zone, is the answer. We are just down the road from Computer Street and nearby to Computer Plaza as well, but we want to offer the public something different,” he said.

According to Bohra, Computer Zone will be the first Wi-Fi enabled mall in Dubai, allowing shoppers to go online at their pleasure. Other innovative ideas include concept shops for major vendors and a ‘business zone’ — an area of 2,000 square feet where vendors can come down from their luxury offices at DIC and meet the channel on the street.

“It took one year for a certain vendor to conduct sales training and to get the salesmen out of their shops and into his office. It is practically impossible for us in the channel to get up to DIC en masse. As an owner I don’t want to lose the salesman and the business coming in for a sales event in DIC. Vendors can pop down here for half an hour, get all the people from the Street in and do their demonstrations. I even have space for launches too, and its use will be free of charge for the first six months.”

The reaction from retailers and IT businesses has been enthusiastic. More than half of the shop spaces on the three floors of the mall will open over the next few weeks, including a major vendor. Negotiations are taking place for the other spaces and Bohra expects the whole mall to be filled with IT retailers, wholesalers and exporters in the near future.

“This will become the Middle East’s IT zone. The kinds of shopkeepers I have identified are service-oriented and they know how to give excellent support to end-users. They are not into the business of undercutting and doing volumes. They give service, and provide consumers with what they want. You will see that after a year the footfall here will be more than 1,000 a day. The clients I get in this mall will be of the right quality to make it a huge success,” concluded Bohra.
